Pillar 3 Optimization
Leverage tax advantages, build wealth
The underestimated power of private pension provision
Pillar 3 is the most flexible and often least-used instrument in Swiss retirement provision. With the right strategy, you can not only save considerably on taxes but also build up substantial wealth for your retirement.
We'll show you how to optimally combine pillar 3a and 3b, choose the right investment strategy, and minimize taxes on withdrawal through smart staggering.

Your benefits at a glance
Tax savings
Pillar 3a contributions are fully deductible from your taxable income – depending on the canton, savings of up to 40%.
Wealth accumulation
With the right investment strategy, you build up substantial wealth over the years.
Flexible investing
From safe interest accounts to equity-based solutions – the investment strategy adapts to your profile.

In-depth knowledge
Pillar 3a vs. Pillar 3b – the differences
Pillar 3a (tied provision) offers tax advantages: contributions are deductible from taxable income, the capital is tax-free during the term, and a reduced tax rate applies on payout. In return, the capital is tied up until 5 years before retirement.
Pillar 3b (free provision) offers more flexibility: you can access the capital at any time. However, there are no tax advantages on contributions. The optimal strategy combines both pillars depending on your personal situation.
Maximum contributions and payment strategies
For employees with a pension fund, the maximum contribution for 2024 is CHF 7'056 per year. Self-employed people without a pension fund can pay in up to 20% of their net income, up to a maximum of CHF 35'280.
The most important rule: pay in the maximum amount every year. Every year you miss is lost forever – you cannot make retroactive contributions.
The right investment strategy
The choice of investment strategy depends on your investment horizon. With more than 10 years until retirement, we generally recommend an equity-based solution with at least 50% equity exposure.
The cost structure is also important: some providers charge high fees that significantly reduce returns. We compare providers and find the best solution.
Staggering your 3a accounts
A common mistake is keeping only a single pillar 3a account. The problem: upon withdrawal, the entire capital is taxed in the same year, leading to high tax progression.
The solution: open 4-5 separate 3a accounts with different providers and pay in on a rotating basis. This way, you can withdraw the accounts in different years and significantly reduce the tax burden.
Avoid common mistakes
These are the mistakes we see most often in practice
Not maxing out contributions
Every franc not paid in is a forgone tax advantage. With high income, the savings can be 40% or more.
Keeping only one 3a account
Without staggering, you pay unnecessarily high taxes on withdrawal. 4-5 accounts are optimal for most situations.
Wrong investment strategy
With a long horizon, you give up considerable return potential with an interest-bearing account.
Accepting excessive fees
Some providers charge over 1% in fees per year. Over decades, that costs tens of thousands of francs in returns.
