Understanding and optimizing the 2nd pillar

In-depth knowledge
How does the pension fund work?
The occupational pension fund (2nd pillar) is a mandatory insurance for employees. Employers and employees jointly pay in contributions, which earn interest.
Upon retirement, the accumulated capital is paid out either as a lifelong pension, as a lump sum (or a combination of both). The amount of contributions and benefits varies greatly between pension funds.
Buying into the pension fund
If you have earned less in the past or entered the workforce later, you likely have buy-in potential.
These buy-ins are fully tax-deductible – with high income, you can save up to 40% in taxes. Timing is important: a buy-in shortly before a lump-sum withdrawal (less than 3 years) is not tax-deductible.
Optimal buy-in strategy
The most common mistake: using up your entire buy-in potential at once. It's better to stagger it over several years to benefit from tax progression each year.
We calculate the optimal amount per year based on your income, your tax situation, and your time horizon.
Pension or lump sum?
At retirement, you face one of the most important decisions: pension, lump sum, or a combination?
The pension offers lifelong security, while the lump sum offers flexibility and can be inherited. The optimal solution depends on many factors: life expectancy, marital status, other income, wealth, tax situation, and personal preferences.
Avoid common mistakes
These are the mistakes we see most often in practice
Not knowing your buy-in potential
Many people don't know how much they can buy in. A look at your pension fund certificate provides clarity.
Buying in everything at once
Staggering over several years often brings more tax savings than a single large buy-in.
Buying in too late
Buy-ins made within 3 years before a lump-sum withdrawal are not tax-deductible.
Not adjusting the investment strategy
Many stay with the standard strategy even though a different one would suit them better.
